Heather Bog Series

These series of paintings were inspired by the ‘Bog Poems’ of Seamus Heaney and whilst walking on the beautiful ancient heather bogs scattered around Ballycastle, situated along the Wild Atlantic Way on west coast of Ireland. I wanted to explore the dualities of life and death, and the fragility of the bogs that are gently draped with a blanket of wild purple heather during the winter months, using use as much natural materials and earth pigments from the locality: peat ash, sand etc., mixed together with water drawn from the natural springs and bogs, which helps to tell the story of the time and place the work was made.
