These experimental monotypes were inspired by my visit to Valentia Island Slate Quarry, Co. Kerry during my winter residency at Cill Rialaig, followed by a print residency at Tyrone Guthrie Centre, in Ireland.

I named the series Scláta [ Gaelic for slate ] and used old, discarded, synthetic slate roof tiles in order to transfer the subtle textures of the weathered patina from the surface onto plain and stained [with oak gall and walnut ink] Japanese Rice and Washi paper. I randomly folded the paper prior to running it through the press, as I did not want to be in total control of the process,  and in order to achieve an element of surprise to the end result once the paper was unfolded. I collected indigenous clay and slate dust to mix with a base ink in order to reflect the colours of the land, which enabled me to form a visual narrative of the place.
